Plural Forms of Compound Nouns

Compound Nouns are made up of different Nouns. There is always the problem of determining which of the segments should attract the Plural marker when there is the need to make the Nouns Plural. 

Here are the guidelines to follow 
Plural in the first element : 
Mother in law…..  Mothers in law 
Passer – by    ……  Passers by 
Father – in-law…. Fathers in law 
Director-General… Directors general 
Plural in the last element. 
The Plural are attached to the last element 
Assistant – director    …..  Assistant directors
Deputy – Governor    ……. Deputy governors 
Grown – up           ………… Grown ups 
Male – nurse      ………….. Male – nurses 
Girlfriend             ………… Girlfriends 
Woman hater  …………… Woman haters
